PERIODONTAL THERAPY

A beautiful smile is more than just shining teeth. Gums, soft tissue, and healthy bones are the foundation that keep teeth nourished and thriving. Our team provides periodontal therapy to diagnose and treat gum disease in all its stages. We work with you through gentle treatments and expert guidance for at-home care so your gums remain pink and healthy for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is inflammation and infection of the gums and tissues that support our teeth. Periodontal disease has several stages, and up to a quarter of adult Americans suffer from some level of it. The earliest symptoms are reddened, swollen gums that may bleed during daily oral care like flossing. As periodontal disease progresses, it can cause the gums to recede and even lead to bone deterioration and tooth loss. With early attention, our team supports patients to halt the progression of periodontal disease and get their healthy, pink gums back.

Periodontal Therapy Procedure

Periodontal therapy helps patients fight off bacteria and plaque that cause periodontal disease. We’ll begin with a dental examination of your tooth and gum health. A periodontal probe is used to measure the depth of the pockets between teeth to assess the progression of the disease. A digital x-ray may also be taken for extra diagnostic information on bone and tooth health.

Early stages of periodontal disease, commonly known as gingivitis, is reversible through a thorough dental cleaning and better oral hygiene habits. We’ll also make suggestions for lifestyle changes for better health. Quitting smoking and antiseptic mouthwashes are awesome allies for kicking gum disease bacteria out of your mouth. Later stages of gum disease require special cleanings to target plaque around and below the gumline. We may suggest scaling and root planning to remove plaque from areas that aren’t reachable with at-home care. This dental deep cleaning can stop periodontal disease from spreading further and protect the structure of your healthy teeth.
