What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are a type of dental restoration that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, which are anchored to the natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the gap. The natural teeth or implants that support the bridge are called abutments. The abutments hold the artificial teeth in place, creating a tooth bridge that fills in the gap from missing teeth. Dental bridges can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials. They’re non-removable restorations that resemble natural teeth to improve appearance and functionality of your smile.

Our Dental Bridge Procedure

The process of getting a dental bridge typically requires two visits with our team. During the first appointment, the abutment teeth are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for the dental crowns. Next, impressions of the teeth are taken to create a custom-fitted bridge. A temporary bridge may be placed to protect the teeth and gums while the permanent bridge is being created.

At the second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is placed and adjusted for proper fit and function. The bridge is then permanently cemented into place. We’ll take our time to ensure there’s a comfortable, secure fit so patients leave our office with confidence in their restoration and appearance.

Your oral health will also contribute to your dentist’s recommendation. Dental bridges require healthy abutment teeth on either side of the gap to support the crowns that create the bridge. Since dental implants are more invasive, the ability to recover from oral surgery and a strong jawbone are necessary for successful treatment.
